Guiding principles for sexual violence education and prevention
The University of Toronto has released its guiding principles for sexual violence education and prevention — and is taking steps to implement them.
Toronto Public Health Mumps Alert
Over the last few weeks there have been outbreaks of mumps in Toronto within the entertainment district and the Toronto District School Board. Public Health has been monitoring the situation closely and informing individuals who might be at risk through contact with a contagious person. If you have your vaccination records (yellow card) you can see whether you have had 2 MMR vaccinations after your first birthday. If you are unsure of your vaccination status, contact your health provider as it may be recommended that you receive a second booster.
Reducing your risk of illness through the winter months
It is at this time of year that we often see a higher number of students with viral infections, such as the flu, colds, and viral gastroenteritis. We want to remind the University community to be especially vigilant during this time with preventative practices, such as careful handwashing, avoiding contact with persons who are ill, not sharing personal items, and staying home if you are ill to avoid further spread of the virus. If you are feeling unwell for longer than the expected amount of time, see your health care practitioner.
Common Cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat). Most people recover after 5 to 10 days.
Influenza (Flu) is a viral infection of the respiratory system (nose, throat and lungs). Most people recover within one to two weeks. Those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for complications.
Viral Gastroenteritis or Norovirus Infection (sometimes called “stomach flu”) is not a flu at all. It is an intestinal infection marked by watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes a fever. It is most commonly caused by contact with an infected individual. Depending on the cause, symptoms usually resolve after 24 to 48 hours.
There is no effective treatment or cure for these viral infections, so prevention is key.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Join the University of Toronto community on Tuesday, December 6 for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
On December 6, we remember the murders of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, whose lives were cut short in 1989 simply because they were women.
This is a day when we consider the ongoing violence that girls and women face in our society, and dedicate ourselves, as individuals and communities, to eliminating all forms of gender-based violence.
On December 6 we will pay tribute to Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
